Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is an exploration adventure where Yoshi investigates the creatures in a strange book to complete its pages. Play involves entering the pages of the book to discover what each creature does, then using their qualities and abilities to solve puzzles and remove blockages to delve deeper into the world. It stands out for its emphasis on cataloguing the menagerie of creatures, the physics of their biological qualities, all wrapped up in a children's book adventure.

When a peculiar talking book falls from the sky, Yoshi uses a magic magnifying glass to jump into the book's pages and catalogue the creatures it contains. Rather than traversing from left to right, you explore each page-like stage, interact with odd animals and environmental objects, and use Yoshi’s familiar actions to reveal behaviours, collect rewards and complete objectives. Maybe a creature on your back, lets flowers bloom, adds firepower, or a bubble-creating creature lets you float.
As you progress, new stages introduce different creatures and rules, with interactions being useful not only in charging forwards but also in revisiting earlier areas for hidden collectables. Its challenge is deliberately light without limited lives or gameover screens. Instead, each level is bursting with ideas as creatures change state, affect one another, or require food, water, weight or temperature to progress.
The result is a game that blends classic Yoshi platforming with more child-like creature interaction and environmental puzzles. Following previous Yoshi platforming games, this aims to be more than a typical jump-and-run challenge, layering exploration, creature cataloguing, and puzzle solving.
