Games are an area of life where my family enjoyed being a little bit more competitive. Whereas at school, particularly in the early years, there is a focus on individual achievement rather than competition, at home it's nice to let the kids excel or fail and then talk about the consequences.

One game that, perhaps not surprisingly, has been good for this has been Skylanders Giants and its battle modes. We've also enjoyed competing on Mario Kart and more recently on finding items in Wonderbook and on our iPad hidden object games.

It was with much interest then that I was sent along to the official hunt for the top Skylander Giants player. Unfortunately, being a little over the 12 year old limit, I couldn’t enter but I got to speak to children who had turned up to see how their skills fared.

The was organized by Activision in collaboration with the Game stores and has been taking place around the UK. It will culminate in the finals at the Lollibop festival in the Olympic Park in London. Each of the regional finalists will compete there to be crowned the official top UK Skylanders Giants player. They will also get take home a variety of signed goodies and a year’s supply of Skylanders Swap Force figures.

As you can see in the video here, the players (aged 6-12 years old) were all very courteous in both defeat or victory. I was very impressed. There was not a little tension in the air as parents and guardians watched on, egging their children on to win their family a trip to the finals. Although there were a few tears along the way everyone went away happy, taking with them a Skylanders poster whether they had won or lost.

There are still a few regional events left where you can enter, details here:

  • 9th August     Nottingham
  • 9th August     Southampton
  • 10th August     Birmingham
  • 10th August     Hamley’s
  • 11th August     Watford
  • 11th August     Thurrock

The finals take place on the 16th in London, and we’ll be there to let you know who is crowned Champion Skylanders Giant player.
