Safer Internet Day 2023

Safer Internet Day 2023 is the 7th of February 2023. This year's theme is ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’.

It's a day that's coordinated in the UK by the UK Safer Internet Centre and sees thousands of organisations get involved to promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

As part of our celebration, our editor was on the SWGfL Gaming Hub Online Safety Podcast. He was talking about games as genuine learning experiences, and a tool to have better communication with children and young people. Talking to Jess McBeath and young co-host Bill Byers, the show highlighted how to set things up to be safe and how to get most out of the video games you play.

"Any game I play it's really to chat with my mates. We chat about life while we play," said Bill about the games he played. "It's a lovely way to stay in touch. And a brilliant example of life online."

This follows this year's Safer Internet Day theme of listening to young voices. Particularly where adults are parents, carers, teachers, government and policymakers. We support this through our information to help parents and carers take control of their family's video games. As Andy said on the podcast:

"At AskAboutGames we provide streamlined information to help parents and carers set up technology to automatically apply agreed and understood limits. There are simple flow charts and advice that take away any confusion and support this process."

There is loads of great content and lots of resources for Safer Internet Day, do let us know if there's something we can add to our list.
